C.A.R.N. Public Meeting Talking Points

What to expect?

There likely will be a lot of people. Arrive early and put your name on the list to speal

1.) Start personal.

Explain why these rocket launches matter to you. How have they impacted you? Why does it matter to you? Why are you bothering to spend an evening here? Do these rockets wake you up? Impact your ability to do work? Your kids to sleep? Make it personal and keep it short.

2.) Recognize these are regulators - try to speak their language.

They do not care about Elon Musk or what is fair or not fair. They only speak in terms of regulations and laws. Consider saying that…

  • Averaging a 600 millisecond sonic boom over a 24 hour period makes no sense. It does not reflect the real-world experience of living under these launches.

  • These launches should be limited by their peak decibel level, not their average.

  • Sonic booms over land made from passenger planes were made illegal in 1973 because people were outraged. Motorcycles sounds have been limited to 80 decibels for decades. Commercial rockets need similar regulations.

  • The rockets may fly over the ocean, but the cone of their impact is directly over cities and communities.

  • The spaceport in Kodiak, Alaska is a another approved space launch facility. There, sonic booms travel only over the ocean, not cities, communities, and homes. It is already in use and a viable alternative.

3.) Up to you but some topics to avoid…

  • Politics and/or political parties. We have no idea about their personal politics.

  • Elon Musk and what is a reasonable use of federal property. That is beyond their scope. They speak the language of OSHA and decibel maximums, not wealthy shareholders and fairness. They are only considering how laws should be interpreted and translated into regulations.
